In 2020 Ben (my brother from another) and I began our crossing from the Pacific coast of Peru to the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Our goal – to cross the continent of South America without the use of a motor. By the end of that year, despite the impact of Covid, we had completed the first part of our journey, walking over 1200 kilometers and reaching the Brazilian frontier. Though this was indeed a huge adventure, something much bigger happened to me that year – I found out I was going to become a father.
Lua was born on the 20th of August, 2021. Becoming a father made me think about how I wanted to provide for my family – not just economically – but spiritually and energetically as well. I want Lua to live a safe and healthy life, but I also want her to grow up knowing that if we really want it, we can all build a life based upon our wildest dreams. Actual Adventures is exactly that – a means for me to provide for my family, but also a way to live a life I truly believe in, including an opportunity to create life changing experiences for anyone who chooses to go on on an actual adventure.
What’s the best thing about travel? Is it the people you meet? No. That is an amazing part of travel, yes – but the best thing about travel is that you get to meet yourself. Being in strange places, with strange people, and doing something that’s physically and mentally challenging – that’s when you get a chance to have really important conversation with the person that matter most in your life – yourself. And yes, you will do it with a group of similar minded adventurers and you will do it while exploring some of the most spectacular environments on the planet – but the real adventure will happen within.
The destination gives definition to the path taken, but going on an actual adventure is about more than leaving one place and arriving at another. It is about who we are when we leave, who we become along, and who we choose to be going forth from that experience.
Actual Adventures is just another wild game we can all play while we’re here – a way for us to provide an experience for each other.
